The house lights were about to drop.

Ben White stood with the band in the wings, all of them focused, relaxed. Nods and wordless fist bumps signaled their readiness.

Ben was definitely ready. Though self taught, over the years he had developed a mature, distinctive, and confident style. He had spent years touring all over the world with Mindi Abair, Zero Theorem, Warren Hill, Magnetico, and American Idol’s Olivia Rox, among many, many others. He brought all of his experience playing electric and upright bass, and Chapman Stick, and thousands of shows worth of backing vocals.

It had been a long road to this moment. Born and raised in New England, he’d honed his craft there and in Upstate New York playing locally, then spent seven years in Austin TX touring and recording before settling in Los Angeles. Once there, he worked his way up through the music scene, emerging as a reliable, professional sideman with his own style, both musically and visually, one that elevates the band around him without stealing focus.

Even off the road, he’d kept working, recording albums with Mindi Abair, Don Felder (Eagles), Warren Hill, with producers like Vernon Reid (Living Color) and Kevin “Caveman” Shirley (Iron Maiden, Rush, Led Zeppelin), projects with Sophie B. Hawkins, Suge Knight, Shooter Jennings, music for licensing in multiple libraries, tracks recorded in studios all over the world, and at his own studio, Area 71.

His passion had driven him, his work ethic and playing had proven him, and his easy-going nature had helped pave the way to the spot where he now stood, moments from downbeat.

The stage manager flashed her Maglite at the band. Go time.

The band nodded its acknowledgement as one.

The house lights dropped, and the crowd roared.
